Reflections on Healthy eating

I spend a lot of time reading and listening to information about health. It can be confusing. It’s hard to keep up all the studies coming out. Even harder is knowing what is good science and what is manipulated by companies that have vested interests.

Who has time for that? Many people don’t have the time or the interest. I do. I’m here for you.

One thing all the spectrums of science agree with: more veg, more veg, more veg. More plants.

A regular scenario in our house:

Me reading a new study out loud: “Blah blah blah.”
Husband interrupts: “Let me guess, the conclusion is ‘eat more leafy greens’?”
Yup. Usually.

Plant based eating has been a game changer for me. I’ll share some of my reasons and the effects it’s had on me as we go. Suffice it to say that when we feed our bodies well it not only affects our bodies but our mind, mood, clarity and general well being.

What you’ll find here:

  •  Recipes and meal ideas that I use that achieve the goals of eating more plants.

  • Summaries of health tidbits I’ve read from quality sources.

  • Bits of my own health story – successes and failures.

What you won’t find here:

  • Perfection – I aim at eating a vegan diet for many good reasons but I’m not militant. Vegan is the goal but tea and toast are vegan, french fries are vegan and so is cotton candy. My goals are health, energy, kindness and sustainability. Sometimes I only hit 50% of those goals. In truth if I had to have a label it would likely be - plant based, dairy free, pescatarian (a few times a year), polite in cross cultural situation..ist.

  • Judgement – because of my own imperfections I won’t be pointing the finger at anyone! If you’re interested in incorporating more plants into your diet…let’s encourage each other. Here are some ways I fall short (in case you need proof):

    • I never seem to have enough energy to get groceries AND cook supper. I will have a fridge full of fresh groceries and order take away.

      It happens. Too often.

    • I would like to be more organized about groceries and meals because I end up throwing away too much rotten produce at the end of the week. Bought with the best of intentions, but you know what they say about good intentions…

    • In a restaurant I try to walk the balance of getting a vegan meal without making it the centre of conversation. I’ll admit that sometimes I give up (to avoid being a distraction) and get the closest thing possible.

    • I can’t imagine ever giving up honey. Maybe I will, but I can’t imagine.

If you’re a hard-core vegan, I realize that I may have lost you by now. If you’re still reading, know that I’d love your help on tightening up this practice.

Let’s all help each other get more plants in these bodies. Together, moving forward.

Reflecting on how we eat, what we eat, and how it affects us all is the goal of this section of the website.

With joy!!
